We spend a lot of time at work. For most of us, this means spending a lot of time at our desk. And if you don’t have a neat workstation, getting work done can be quite difficult – keeping you at your desk longer than necessary.
Being neat and tidy is not something everyone cares about, and at home, that’s OK. However, at work, being neat will not only help you be more productive, it’ll also help make your workstation a more enjoyable place to be.
Think about it: when you’re surrounded by clutter, don’t you feel all over the place? If you’re like us, a more organized workspace will help you stay organized and focused, resulting in more productivity.
For those of you who struggle with maintaining a neat workstation, here are a few simple tips that’ll help you clean up your act!
Clutter is often times a major culprit for making a workstation look unruly. We’re not suggesting removing all of your personal items, but only keep the ones that mean something to you. A plant and a picture or two are OK, but anything other than that can probably go. If it’s not helping you work better – get rid of it.
Instead of letting papers and files stack up all week (or month) long, take the time to designate an area for those files. More than just designating an area/drawer/shelf for paperwork and files, make yourself put things away when you’re done using them. This will help you form a habit, and in no time you won’t have to think about organizing your files.
Don’t eat lunch/snacks at your desk
Although many tend to work through lunch, eating at your desk often creates crumbs and the potential for spills that can ruin documents and even computer/laptops. Instead of eating at your desk, take a couple minutes to eat in your company’s break room. If this isn’t an option, have an area of your desk that is easy to clean and away from important stuff.
As a general rule, we suggest taking a few minutes at the end of each day to straighten up your workstation. This will help you wind down and prepare for the next day, while setting yourself up to get straight to work the next day. Your workstation will be neater and you’ll be happier and more productive!
