In recent years, more and more office workers have turned to standing desks in an effort to combat the sedentary lifestyle associated with desk jobs. For those of us who choose to remain seated, the adoption of a standing desk might look like nothing more than a fellow employee’s thinly veiled attempt to appear more productive. In fact, however, some studies have shown that standing during the workday can confer some very real health benefits on office workers.
The Sitting Disease
Concerns among health officials about the sedentary lifestyles of office workers have become so widespread that some have even compared the effects of sitting for long periods of time to the effects of smoking. This comparison might be a little sensationalist, but scientific research has demonstrated that a sedentary lifestyle can have a measurable negative impact on a person’s health.
In a study conducted by Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic, researchers found that adults who spent “more than four hours a day sitting in front of the television had an 80 percent increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared with adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the TV.” Sedentary lifestyles have also been linked to an increased risk of contracting other diseases such as type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer.
The Good News
Levine and his team also found that, simply by standing up and moving around for a few minutes each hour, people could significantly reduce the impact of these adverse health effects. Standing desks help facilitate these brief periods of regular activity by making it easier for workers to move around and stretch their legs.
Some workers also report that they’re able to work better while standing. A few famous authors such as Kierkegaard, Dickens and Hemmingway set the precedent for working while standing long before standing desks started making appearances in offices.
